A professional school counselor should be certified and licensed. Aside from helping students through academic and personal problems, a counselor can also guide them with career choices if they are in high school or college. A good counselor can boost a student’s social development, academic performance and confidence and can help students make better academic, career, and life choices.
People who should take this degree are the ones who enjoy working closely with students and sincerely want to help students overcome their problems. Counselors can offer moral support and guidance to adults and children who feel anxious and afraid. Counselors may encounter serious problems such as alcohol and drug abuse. This career path is ideal for someone who can accept a wide range of responsibilities such as helping students overcome another classmate’s death, depression, and bullying problems, among other things.
Potential candidates for a M.Ed. of School Counseling degree should also be willing and able to effectively coordinate with the college administration and faculty members. Additionally, counselors should not be afraid to talk to parents of students with problems concerning home life.
To be able to counsel students at college, you must obtain a Master’s Degree, either a university or at an online program. On average, you will need 60 hours of credits to get a certificate. Most educational institutions will require guidance counselors to obtain certification before they can be hired. To be eligible for certification, you will have to complete your Master’s course and then pass the board exams.
Most schools, from primary grade to college are required to have a guidance counselor on their campus or college grounds. This ensures that most Master’s graduates will have employment after taking the degree.
There are other options for people in this field aside from being of service to students. You may choose to become a clinical therapist to counsel those with various problems. In this career path, you may counsel individuals or groups. Group therapy sessions have a moderator who is usually a professional counselor. Or you may want to become a mental health counselor for people with mental problems. This requires you to provide psychotherapy to your patients but does not give you the right to prescribe medication for mental health patients.
You can also choose to offer your services to those with drug and alcohol dependency. This may mean working at a rehab center, at a school campus or putting up your own private practice.
Another career path for someone with a Masters in School Counseling is to offer your guidance and advice to families or couples with problems. This can include marriage counseling or helping families with child-parent issues.
